Mustafa Barghouti is a Palestinian democracy activist who represents the Independent Palestine list on the Palestinian Legislative Council. He finished behind Mahmoud Abbas in the 2005 Palestinian Elections.
Barghouti served on the Palestinian-Jordanian delegation to the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991, and as Secretary-General of the Palestinian People’s Party, before resigning in 2002. He is president of the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, and founded the Palestinian National Initiative in 2002, with the aim of establishing Palestinian national unity. He currently serves as its Secretary-General.
