Journalist and broadcaster
Joan Bakewell's career on British TV and in print has spanned over forty years. She first came to national prominence as one of the presenters of an early BBC Two programme, Late Night Line-Up, and later co-presented Granda TV's Reports Action and presented the documentary show Heart of the Matter. She was also Newsnight's arts correspondent for a short period in the mid-1980s.
Bakewell was appointed CBE in 1999 and DBE in 2008. Also in 2008, she was appointed a voice for older people by the UK Government. She was Chair of the British Film Institute from 2000 to 2002 and is currently Chair of the theatre company Shared Experience. Bakewell is the author of several books, including her autobiographies The Centre of the Bed (2004) and The View from Here: Life at Seventy (2007), and Belief (2005). She currently writers for the Independent, and has previously written for the Guardian and The Times. In 2009, she won 'Journalist of the Year' at the annual Stonewall Awards.
