Author, novelist
Alaa Al Aswany, a former dentist, is an Egyptian political writer and activist who writes in both English and Arabic. He is a founding member of Kefaya, a political coalition that opposes the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. His 2007 book 'The Yacoubian Building' was adapted for both television and film and is one of the most widely-read Arabic novels.
Aswany's other books in English are 'Chicago' and 'Friendly Fire: Ten Tales of Today’s Cairo' (both 2008).
