The Edinburgh International Book Festival began in 1983. Since then, the Book Festival has grown rapidly in size and scope to become the largest and most dynamic event of its kind in the world. The 2009 programme featured over 700 events. In 2001 the Festival developed a high profile debates and discussions series which is now one of the festival's hallmarks. Each year, writers from all over the world gather to become part of this unique forum in which audience and author meet to exchange thoughts and opinions on some of the world's most pressing issues.
