Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has outlined plans for a referendum on voting reform next May. He is proposing to change our current First Past the Post system to something called Alternative Vote, which may turn out to be the first step on the road to full proportional representation.
Supporters of AV say that it will break the Labour - Conservative duopoly, isolate the extremists and promote conciliatory politics. Its detractors claim it will make Westminster even less representative of the nation's needs.
