The origins of today's international system of sovereign independent nation states are said to lie in the Peace of Westphalia, which brought an end to the Thirty Years War in Europe in 1648. But commentators and politicians have been queueing up to claim that the days of the "Westphalian System" are numbered. Meanwhile academics debate whether the modern nation state owes anything to Westphalia at all.

Interesting. Who would have thought a french academic would support dirigist policies to replace liberal free markets? A peace centered on Russia, Germany and France? Russia's entire history is based on the principle of keeping everyone out while trying to influence beyond its borders. Such an axis is a variation of a French revolutionary dream and itself an internationalist expression of a nationalist vision. Very post-structuralist!
