Among the colourful cast of Tudor characters, few are as controversial as Sir Thomas More, Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor from 1529 to 1532. Regarded by Roman Catholics as the greatest of the English martyrs and by people of all faiths as a supreme embodiment of the Renaissance humanist, he has also been portrayed as a religious bigot who delighted in persecuting heretics and whose reputation as a man of principle is ill-deserved.
