Pope John Paul II was the first truly global pope: he had a huge influence on world affairs during his 26-year pontificate. He undoubtedly had a role in the fall of Communism, especially in his native Poland. But to his detractors, this is outweighed by the effect of his moral conservatism on the developing world. Because his policies still dominate the Church, the debate about his papacy remains hugely relevant.
