Osborne's budget wasn't fair

George Osborne, the UK Chancellor (Finance Minister) has introduced a deficit-cutting plan for the UK economy that he hailed as the work of a "progressive alliance". Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats (the junior coalition partner) wrote to party members that "we have to take difficult decisions to tackle the deficit and lay the foundations of a fairer society". But the Left disagrees. Polly Toynbee in the Guardian says that "the word progressive vanished into the realm of doublethink". So is the budget fair?
