The term Intelligent Design was coined in 1978 in order to keep creationism alive after the US Supreme Court had ruled, in Edwards v. Aguillard, that the teaching of "creation science" alongside evolution was a violation of the Establishment Clause, which prohibits state endorsement of a religion. But over the years, many proponents of Intelligent Design have become cleverer and more persuasive than their intellectual ancestors.
Many now accept evolution. They just say that the picture could not exist without a cosmic designer. So have the new media-savvy Intelligent Design pundits, who make it so clear that they are not creationists and accept evolution, now become so sophisticated that their scientific opponents need to raise their game?
