A crackdown on travelling people – of Irish and Roma origins – is taking place across Europe. The French government has rounded up more than 700 Roma immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania, who are to be flown back to their home countries on special charter flights. This is not a one-off – gypsies have been embroiled in disputes around the continent in recent years. Are their attitudes and itinerant way of life responsible for this exclusion, or should European society take the blame for its suspicion and its prejudice?
