Google has scanned and digitised some ten million books, which they hope to place online, so that everyone in the world can search and read them from home whenever they like. However, Google did without asking permission, and many authors - including Thomas Pynchon, Zadie Smith and Jeanette Winterson - have taken the opportunity to opt out.
The search giant claim their project will democratise and enrich our culture. Others fear that a single for-profit company will gain dominant control over the world’s literature.
