Naomi Campbell’s appearance at Liberian dictator Charles Taylor’s trial in The Hague has directed global attention to the pressing issue of blood diamonds.
Blood or “conflict” diamonds are essentially those stones which are mined in areas controlled by rebel armies and used to finance their bloody civil wars. They have underwritten some of Africa’s bloodiest conflicts – involving countries such as Angola, Cote D’Ivoire, the Congo – and crucially, in light of the ongoing trial in The Hague, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
It has been claimed that this problem is disappearing. Is it really?
