Many football fans watching the World Cup are feeling disenchanted with the beautiful game – and not only because England are performing so badly. Halfway through the group stages, fewer goals had been scored than had been by the same point in any previous World Cup. Wayne Rooney admitted that he was finding it dull, telling the Mirror: "all the games I've watched haven't been exciting. I hope it gets a little bit more exciting."
But if football wasn't entertaining, then the last World Cup final wouldn't have attracted a global television audience of 700 million. And there have been some gripping matches this time round - the US drew 2-2 with Slovenia in a breathtaking game, and Portugal were brilliant as they crushed North Korea 7-0.
So is it time to tweak the rules to liven up the game? Or is it unimprovable?
