Should we have the right to decide when and how we die? Certainly, a large majority of people in Britain think that we should. But, as yet, the law does not allow it. This has led to a stream of stories about terminally-ill people travelling to the Dignitas euthanasia clinic in Switzerland, and high-profile court cases about the legality of accompanying them.
So, the campaign for legalising assisted suicide is gathering pace. But can we be sure there would be enough safeguards in place to ensure that vulnerable old people are not pressured into making decisions which they can’t retract?
