The history of the biological sciences has been punctuated by bitter controversies. In the 1930s JBS Haldane and RA Fisher so hated each other that their students were hardly allowed to talk to one another. In recent years, Oxford zoologist Richard Dawkins and the late Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould and their followers have carried on this tradition. Both sides claim to be the true inheritors of Darwin. So what is the debate about and who, if anyone, is right?
