At the start of the 21st century, the Islamic countries of the Middle East are still mostly governed by a mixture of autocratic monarchies, strict religious conservatives, and corrupt, single-party rulers. Despite all the chaos which followed the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, Iraq is now considered an example of democratic reform in the region.
But it remains to be seen whether Iraq’s neighbours - societies such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt - are yet ready for all the uncertainties that would come with mass voter participation.
