The foreign policy debate amongst the Prime-Ministerial hopefuls tried to ignite passions around Afghanistan, Iraq and Britain's nuclear deterrent, Trident. But neither passions or disagreements ran very high. The country seems much more interested in whether to welcome the Pope and how to control immigration than in Britain's projected global power.
Has Britain turned inwards because it is time, for now, to tend to our own internal problems of economy and security, or is something deeper happening: are we maturing into a small, normal, post-imperial nation?
